The following table show the points for reaching the round of 16 (all three players did) and up. SN can retain her #1 status by reaching the semi-finals. Both CM and LXR have a shot at the top spot, with some help.

I don't know how exasperated administrators must feel every time someone other than the best player reaches the top. Look at what they did to LD in order to prove that their flawed "rankings" system is the real deal, despite the way he kept embarassing the dope cheat blue eyed boy of BWF every time he showed up.

Same has been the case with tennis in the past. When Serena used to play (and ofcourse win) only majors and outside of that only appeared in tournaments where she recieved 7 figure appearance fees (and tank early), the WTA computer showed anomalies like Caro/Dinara (lol)/Amelie as #1, yet no one doubted who the BEST was. I would say that just like LCW's entire reign, even Kim Clijsters' reign was clouded since she wasn't the best where it mattered. Only Henin justified the then WTA #1 rankings as she beat the best(Rena) consistently (humbled her at times infact) to be the best.

    There's always a system.

In fact, I do know that points awarded have been overhauled on GPG to be fairer. (Got the news from the man who proposed the change).

I don't know the exact breakdown but it looks like a lot of points are given when winning in team events. Whether it should be so much or not is debatable.

In the ensuing debate on Rankings, there are many flaws of rankings:

    1. Players not playing enough tournaments, even when fit. This problem is serious, especially with top players. Just this week, Zhao Yunlei dropped from no. 1 in both XD and WD to 2nd in both. Similar has been the case with other players.

    2. Strategic Picking of Tournaments:

I have noticed many anomalies which allows one to pick tournaments very strategically and get good ranking points. Like You can pick some GPGs and Superseries where the top players aren't playing.

To add to above, in my opinion GPGs have too much points for them. Winning a GPG gives points almost equivalent to a semifinal finish in Superseries, when often that is not the case.

I very much doubt LXR can win here, she is using this tournament as a testing ground to see how far she has recovered and regained her form which is what LYB is keen to know in preparation for the Sudirman Cup.

She may win or she may not, all depend on who is advancing to the next round. She will at least go to semi.

So, the winner between LXR and Saina will take the no 1 spot.

LXR vs CM final. CM in 2.
Although SN has got a fantastic opportunity to justify the computer tomorrow. Given that LXR is coming back, won't be that huge a upset if SN pulls through. CM should decimate WSX though. WSX had a 2 hour match.

Li xuerui has to win to defend her points>> ?? Am i right? If she lose tomorrow , then she will lose points. Instead, saina lost at round 16 last year to Yao xue. THis year, she has beaten her in R16 easily.

Malaysian Open last year was in Jan/Feb.

The points from rankings have already been deducted.

Best of luck to Saina. Jai Hind.

So basically if Saina beats LXR tomorrow, its because LXR is still testing the waters and if Saina loses then the ranking system is a joke.

hmmm... beating the crap outta the chinese system for the last half decade and still no street cred. thankfully the chinese coaches lose their poker face when their wards are playing saina and that says enough.

what a bunch of whiners the rest.

btw, saina gets 7130 points by reaching the semis (9350-2220 from last years singapore open) that takes her to 85,600 something as per my cals. or maybe i am missing something.

Yes you are. SGP Open isn't among her best 10 results of the ;last 52 weeks.
She only gains 1000 odd points. Its a shoot off tomorrow. And even if Saina wins in KL and SGP all LXR will need to dislodge her is a SF at SGP.

Neither Li XueRui nor Carolina Marin will play Singapore Open. Therefore, even if Saina Nehwal lost her WR#1 this week, she will get it back after Singapore Open, as Li XueRui will lose 7,800 points from the last Singapore Open.
