. Terms used when we talk about Badminton Techniques and Training (Strokes/Shots) Greetings, I was reading and replying in this thread, found located at: http://www.badmintoncentral.com/for...o-Improve-Drop-Shots-When-and-how-to-use-them The intention of this thread to talk about the terminology used in different countries and/or used by different coaches. Let us start by identifying the different terms used. And we shall start with this simple one, although some may not know it is a special term used; * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally. Hope that our various BCers can continue to add in more terms, commonly used in our own special corners of the world. .
The Clear . Now we shall add in the second term; the Clear. * Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally. .
The Lift . We shall add in the third term; the Lift. * Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke * Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally. .
* Dribble / Netshot = Any shot played from ones own forecourt to the opponents forecourt with the shuttle passing in close proximity to the net tape.
The Dropshot . We shall add in the fifth term; the Dropshot. * Dropshot = A shot played from our overhead position to the Fore Court of our opponent's court * Dribble = Any shot played from ones own forecourt to the opponents forecourt with the shuttle passing in close proximity to the net tape. * Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke * Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally. .
The Dribble . Thanks keith.roche for adding in more terms for us. So, I gather that a Dribble is a soft controlled shot played from Fore Court to Fore Court. .
The Tumble . The Tumble is a netplay that makes the shuttlecock somersaults once or more times over the net. * Tumble = A shot played at the net to our opponent's Fore Court, creating the shuttlecock to somersault once or more times over the net * Dropshot = A shot played from our overhead position to the Fore Court of our opponent's court * Dribble = Any shot played from ones' own forecourt to the opponents' forecourt with the shuttle passing in close proximity to the net tape. * Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke * Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally. .
The Spinning Netplay . We shall add in the Spinning Netplay. * Spinning Netplay = A shot played near the net to our opponent's Fore Court, creating the shuttlecock to spin (rotating) over the net * Tumble = A shot played near the net to the our opponent's Fore Court, creating the shuttlecock to somersault once or more times over the net * Dropshot = A shot played from our overhead position to the Fore Court of our opponent's court * Dribble = Any shot played from ones' own forecourt to the opponents' forecourt with the shuttle passing in close proximity to the net tape. * Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke * Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally. .
The Punch Clear . We shall add in the Punch Clear. For me, I prefer to use the term 'Attacking Clear'; to indicate that we are to give less time for our opponent to react and/or respond to this shot. * Punch Clear = An overhead Clear executed to just clear over the highest reach that can be met by our opponent. * Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke * Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally. .
The Defensive Clear . We shall add in the Defensive Clear. * Defensive Clear = An overhead or underarm Clear executed to our opponent's Back Tram Lines; allowing us more time to return to our base position * Punch Clear = An overhead Clear executed to just clear over the highest reach that can be met by our opponent. * Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke * Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally. .
The Base Position . We shall add in Base Position. * Base Position = (For Singles Games) is the middle position between the net and the back line, and the middle position between the side lines * Defensive Clear = An overhead or underarm Clear executed to our opponent's Back Tram Lines; allowing us more time to return to our base position * Punch Clear = An overhead Clear executed to just clear over the highest reach that can be met by our opponent. * Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke * Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally. .

Terms used: Shots and/or Strokes . I shall not be so dominating in this thread; but to allow our BCers to define and/or add in more definitions of shots/strokes. I shall await for more BCers to enter into this discussion, regarding terms used: Shots and/or Strokes. .
The Drive . OK, let's talk about Drives. There are many different drive strokes/shots used at Badminton. But a drive implies a hard and fast hitting shot that is intended to pass past our opponent's racket before he/she is ready/prepared to intercept the shuttlecock's path. Here are some Drives, namely; * Drive Service = A Service that is hit hard and fast, hoping to pass past a receiver before he/she is ready to intercept it * Drive Return of Smash = In Doubles, a Drive Return of Smash is played/hit fast, to pass past the front player to the back player * Drive from side line = A shot played horizontally along the side line to skim just over the net height, hit hard and fast * etc, etc, ...... Please allow me (and other BCers) to have more time to post more info about other different Drives. .
The Drive Service . We shall add in the Drive Service * Drive Service = A Service that is hit hard and fast, hoping to pass past a receiver before he/she is ready to intercept it. * Deception = To fool and/or to wrong foot our opponent. Make him/her think we are executing this shot when we are playing another shot * Base Position = (For Singles Games) is the middle position between the net and the back line, and the middle position between the side lines * Defensive Clear = An overhead or underarm Clear executed to our opponent's Back Tram Lines; allowing us more time to return to our base position * Punch Clear = An overhead Clear executed to just clear over the highest reach that can be met by our opponent. * Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke * Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally. .
The Drive Return of Smash . We shall add in the Drive Return of Smash * Drive Return of Smash = A shot driven back quickly before our opponent is ready to intercept or to return it * Drive Service = A Service that is hit hard and fast, hoping to pass past a receiver before he/she is ready to intercept it * Deception = To fool and/or to wrong foot our opponent. * Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke * Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally. .

What do you call defensive type drop shots? The ones taken below net height from the baseline to around mid-court and lands on opponent's forecourt? Oh, and please add 'push'. I'm unable to define it properly.
The Push . Don't know about this one. There are several ways to describe how we can hit the shuttlecock. Push is one. * Push = A shot hit by a racket-head swung at constant velocity. A Doubles Low Service can be performed with a Push * XD Push Shot = Pushing the shuttlecock to the Side Tram Lines; directing it to fall between the front and the back players * Jia You = "Add Fuel" in Chinese (Mandarin). It is yelled/cheered to players to become stronger physically and mentally * Drive Return of Smash = A shot driven back quickly before our opponent is ready to intercept or to return it * Drive Service = A Service that is hit hard and fast, hoping to pass past a receiver before he/she is ready to intercept it * Deception = To fool and/or to wrong foot our opponent. * Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke * Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally. .
