The current Spore team is the worst ever, no fighting spirit, no stamina, no technical skill especially Derick Wong(play without brain). How can lose to France and Netherlands and struggle to beat Canada n Spain. Derick Wong, Danny Bawa n Vanissa Neo don't deserve to be in the team. All show no improvement after so many years. Look at other countries, no hesitation in dropping off form players. Indonesia dropped Rambaka n Santoso, Malaysia dropped Chong Wei Feng n Daniel Liew, Japan dropped K Tago and China kicked out Du Peng Yu. The coaches must also take the blame, training not tough enough, don't know how to advise or change strategy during game interval . The current Spore team & coaches need a massive overhaul. Expect another big fat zero in the SEA Games at home.
It indeed needs some courage that your very first two posts in BC cover the same ranting about S'pore team's unsatisfactory performance in 2015 SC Do you have any idea about the amount of money spent in growing badminton in S'pore from year to year? at least within the last three to five years, increased or not, and this is not a rhetorical question of mine.
On the contrary, I feel the Singapore team has improved for the past few years, fewer losses during qualifying rounds and moving past main rounds in competitions and showed better resiliency. What I feel though, is that Singapore needs to send them to more competitions, in particular GP and GPG to gain more experience, be more consistent in their performance and improve themselves and not aim Super Series as clearly we aren't even at that level. Only when they have performed more consistently then they should go to Super Series. Malaysia, Indonesia and China are sending their yet-to-be-proven youngsters/yet-to-perform players to smaller competitions, I don't see why the management is still choosing to send them to competitions that don't allow them to perform at all.
Very obvious, drop Derick Wong , Vanesa Neo n other non performing older players.. Let Loh Kean Yew n Sean Lee and other younger players(under 21) play the super series more regularly. Get Zhang Bei Wen n Gu Juan back. Spend more money and poach top coaches like Li Yong Bo, Park Joo Bong, Carolina Marin's coach or even Zhang Ning. Msia hired Morten Frost and he has improve them all round. Training have to be very intense (three times the current schedule) to built fitness and mental toughness. And much much more can be done and improve over the current situation.
OK. Where to get the extra money? Probably that's your no.1 big issue. How much extra would SBA need to spend? And are you sure money will bring those people like Zhang Bei Wen, Gu Juan, Li Yong Bo, Park Joo Bong, Zhang Ning to Singapore?
In this World Money can buy anything, the question is just how much? If you want to succeed you have to spend - just like Real Madrid, Barcelona n Chelsea. Malaysia n Japan pay huge to get Morten Frost n Park joo Bong.. Why can't Spore pay to get Li Yong Bo-he need a new challenge after leading China for 20 years. Its depend on SBA's vision, want to stay as a weak badminton nation or want to become a top 5 power.
I am sure SBA would spend more money if they can get it. So, my question is, exactly who will give money to SBA?
So who give the money to BAM? or Japan Badminton Association or Korea BA? Of course it come from the govt. You would have ask why would the govt give the money to SBA? My answer is Badminton is a core sport earmark to succeed by the Spore govt.
Of course it is not money only - you need good coaches plus talented and committed players who want to succeed.
If done from scratch, should start from early ages: schools, clubs, have someone or better again, a team with acumen on the talent scout to identify the early potential. If domestic coaches are not good enough then hire the good ones from overseas, and willing to hire for extended period if they bring significant improvements (like JPN on Park Joo Bong). Send the potential to many tournaments, start with small ones first that fit best. If they improve then bigger ones. Of course SBA need to give good monetary incentives to the potential players to achieve more, and the coaches as well. Questions: -Will the SIN govt provides the money to SBA? -Do the SIN society have a great interest in sports incl. badminton? -Is there available sufficient pool size of human resources to pick from? Spore does have tiny population. -Will the parents allow their kids to be picked for such program? Faith matter, do the parents have belief in badminton for the better future of their kids? -Will the candidates have the willingness and motivations to undergo the tough training and working hard on that? Endurance, motivation, determination... Affluent society tend to choose easier life. -If domestic pool isn't sufficient, can SBA pick from overseas (have talent scout there), as done by SIN table tennis that results in those top players, all sourced from CHN? Money alone won't solve all the problems, but without money hardly anything will work either
Then you need to be an accountant and a manager. Do a whole review and see if more money and incentives will produce better results. Ask the government if they will provide 25% or 50% more funding to players and coaches. Do an analysis to see if that will be attractive enough for the population of singapore to go into badminton as a career.
it's good if a rant can be followed up by a clear vision of how to acheive it in terms of resources and value for money (cost effectiveness). Because the politicians and the public are bound to ask how would one justify the extra expense. I guess if the government were to recognise sports as an academic acheivement in the curriculum for University entrance e.g. Equivalent to A levels, then a sea of change would occur.
Thats is SBA's job not mine. In fact many players quits because of the incompetence of SBA (they hired and sacked the wrong coaches and backed the wrong players). Kendrick Lee, world junior runner up quit because when he qualify for the Olympic SBA select a "foreigner" to take his place. They make so many wrong decisions that many potential world class junior Spore players quit early.
Oic, I ain't aware of those backstage scenes SBA should have learned from its sibling, STTA, how to run quite a successful sporting body that fits a tiny nation
